rainbow window art

Inspired by an artist I stumbled across on instagram my kids and I created a bunch of window art in our home this week.

The process is simple and really accessible and we were able to do it using leftover cellophane sheets from another project.

The cellophane sticks to windows just by using water to adhere it - so the process is extremely kid friendly to experiment with.

Materials we used:
- cellophane squares
- cardstock
- scissors, pencils, wet-erase markers
- a spray bottle of water

Steps:
1. use your card stock to create stencils.
- trace the size of your cellophane sheets onto the card stock
- draw a simple design in the center leaving enough space for a border
- cut out the shape leaving a stencil behind (the border is the stencil)
2. trace your shapes onto the cellophane sheets
- center the stencil on your cellophane sheet
- use a wet erase marker to trace the stencil onto the cellophane
3. cut out your designs
- cut out your shape carefully with sharp scissors (this was tricky but doable for my kids)
- you'll use the border and the inside shape so cut both carefully, it's okay to cut into the border, it'll stick back together on the window
- once you cut the shape out trim around it again to make it a little smaller than the hole in the border so you can see space between the border and the shape
4. repeat as necessary
- make at least 2 of each shape in different colors
- make enough to fill your window as desired
5. apply your designs to a window
- lightly dampen the window with a mist of water
- place the cellophane onto the wet window so it sticks where you'd like it
- carefully press out air bubbles so the shapes lay flat

Now you can wait for sun to shine through your windows so you can enjoy the most magical rainbow light!
